These six reports follow one rule: each is a composite, assembled from patterns that recur in published experience reports (such as the collections on Erowid) and in participant descriptions from laboratory studies. None describes one real person, and no names, ages or places have been added. They are ordered from the gentlest form to the strongest, so you can see what changes as the strength goes up.
What changes is mostly depth. In the Barcelona dose study, lower doses increased bodily sensations while the highest dose took away contact with the body altogether (Maqueda et al., 2015). The timing stays similar for every smoked form: onset within a minute, peak around two minutes, most of it over within twenty (see minute by minute).
Leaf quid, the slow version
Composite account. Dried leaves soaked and held in the mouth, at home in the evening, sober sitter present, lights low.
The leaves were bitter enough to make the first ten minutes mainly about not swallowing. Around minute fifteen the ceiling started to look like it had a grain, like wood, running from one corner to the other. The grain moved, gently, as if being combed.
Over the next half hour the sense of the room changed more than the room itself. The sofa seemed to be on a slope. There was a mild pull to the left, easy to go along with. With eyes closed there were flat, coloured shapes that slid past each other like sheets of paper on a table.
It never became overwhelming. Conversation stayed possible, although a few sentences ended somewhere other than where they started. After about an hour and a half the slope levelled out. What stayed was a pleasant tiredness and the impression of having watched something from the side.
Dried leaf, smoked
Composite account. Plain dried leaf in a pipe, two full inhalations, seated on the floor against a sofa, sitter present.
Within a minute the sound of the room shifted, as if it was coming from the next room. The coffee table seemed to slide a few centimetres sideways and then slide back. For two or three minutes there was a strong, ticklish pressure on the right side of the body, and the feeling of being slightly rotated.
Nothing went further than that. The room never disappeared, and the person could describe what was happening while it happened, mostly in single words: "sideways", "pulling", "funny". Then a long laugh. By ten minutes it had faded, and by twenty only a light-headed feeling was left.
Reports at this level often sound underwhelmed, and that is a useful finding in itself: plain leaf smoked is the step where people learn what the pull feels like without leaving the room.
5X, the room starts to fold
Composite account. 5X extract in a glass pipe, small amount, bedroom with curtains closed, sitter on a chair nearby.
The first sign arrived during the exhale: the wall opposite seemed to fold along a vertical line, like a page being turned very slowly. The turning page had the room printed on it.
The next minutes were spent between two versions of the bedroom, one on top of the other. Moving a hand changed which one was in front. There was a voice-like hum without words, and a sense that the layers were being sorted by someone who knew what they were doing.
The sitter later said the person had sat completely still with open eyes and smiled twice. At about six minutes the pages settled into one room again. The laughing came at minute eight, at nothing in particular. Afterwards, most of the middle part was hard to put into words.
10X, becoming part of the scenery
Composite account. 10X extract, small amount in a pipe, lying on a mattress on the floor, sitter present with a watch.
There was no build-up. One moment there was the lighter; the next, the person was flat, part of a surface that ran a long way in every direction. It felt like being a stripe on a very large piece of fabric that was being pulled tight.
Something on the far side of the fabric was paying attention. It was not unfriendly. It seemed to be waiting for the stripe to understand something about its position, and every time that almost happened the fabric shifted again.
According to the sitter's watch, the person did not answer to their name for about four minutes. Then came a slow return: first the sense of having hands, then the mattress, then the words for both. "I was a pattern," was the first full sentence. The whole thing took eleven minutes. It felt like an afternoon.
20X, another place entirely
Composite account. 20X extract, a very small amount, lying down in a dim, cleared room, experienced user, sober sitter present.
The room was gone before the smoke was out. In its place was a long, bright space with flat colours and hard outlines, like a cartoon drawn very carefully. It felt familiar, the way a childhood street feels familiar, though nothing in it could be named.
There were others there. They seemed to be expecting someone and briefly unsure whether this was the right someone. One of them used a name, and it was the right name. The feeling was neither fear nor comfort; it was the certainty of having always known this place and having forgotten it every day.
Coming back was effortful. The sitter saw the person try to get up at minute five and gently kept them seated. They have no memory of that. The first words afterwards were a question about which room this was. Twenty minutes later only fragments were left: the colours, the outline, the name.
40X, no one left to report
Composite account. 40X extract, a tiny amount, experienced user who had used lower strengths several times, lying down, sitter present.
This is the shortest report, because there is so little to tell. There was the first part of the inhale, and then there was nothing that could be called a person. No room, no body, no sense of time. Afterwards the description was "pure position without anybody in it".
The sitter saw two minutes of complete stillness, then a series of small movements of the hands, then a long, loud laugh. Recognising the room again took about ten minutes, and the person said they had "been away for years". They could not say what had happened during those years.
Reports at this level often end like this one: with a clear statement that it was not something to repeat soon. At high doses researchers saw frequent unresponsiveness and memory gaps (MacLean et al., 2013), and the shop describes its 40X as intended for experienced users only, with a sober trip sitter present.
What the six reports have in common
- The clock barely changes between strengths. How far the trip goes does.
- The physical pull or pressure is present at every level; at the strongest levels it turns into having no body at all.
- Every report from 10X upwards has a memory gap that the sitter can fill in, and a moment where the person moved or spoke without knowing it.
- In every report the room was quiet, the person was lying or sitting down, and someone sober was present. That is no accident: see difficult trips for what tends to happen when it is otherwise.
