Salvia feels unlike most other substances, and the people who study it agree. In a survey of 500 users, the most common answer to "what is it like" was that it is unique (38.4%) (Baggott et al., 2010); volunteers in a Johns Hopkins study said it was qualitatively different from other drugs they knew (MacLean et al., 2013). Yet the same handful of themes returns in report after report. Below are nine of them, each with what research found and a short composite fragment.
The fragments are written from patterns in published experience reports and in participant descriptions from laboratory studies. They are illustrations, not quotes from one person. Quotes in quotation marks come from the cited studies.
Being pulled or pressed
The most typical salvia sensation is physical and directional: a force that pulls, pushes or presses. The Johns Hopkins team described disruptions in vestibular and interoceptive signals, such as "change in spatial orientation, pressure on the body" (Johnson et al., 2011). Participants in Barcelona were more specific: "A force was pressing the right side of my body down and another force was pulling my legs up" (Maqueda et al., 2015).
The pull starts at my right shoulder. Patient, steady, like a tide that knows where it is going. Resisting it makes it stronger, so I stop resisting.
Splitting in two
Closely related is the sense of the body or the world being divided. "The corporeal sensation was of a force dividing my body in half," one participant said; another: "A very potent force split my body in two halves, sending the right side to a faraway world" (Maqueda et al., 2015). Reports also describe the visual field opening along a seam, or the room separating into strips that move at different speeds.
The room opens along a line from the ceiling lamp to the floor. My left half stays on the sofa. My right half is somewhere with better light.
Becoming an object or a shape
Salvia reports are full of people who were, for a while, a thing: part of a wall, a page, a chair, a pattern. The DEA lists "object distortions" among the effects (DEA, December 2025). In Barcelona, one volunteer "changed from being a square, to a pentagon, to a pyramid", and another said body sensations were "more close to objects, minerals or plastic materials" than to anything organic (Maqueda et al., 2015).
I am the third shelf of the bookcase. Not sitting on it, being it. The books lean on me and that is my whole purpose, and it seems fair.
Overlapping realities and other places
The DEA mentions "overlapping realities" (DEA, December 2025). Researchers found the outside world fading at higher doses while elaborate visions took its place (Maqueda et al., 2015). Participants described leaving: "I have left my body and traveled to another world or dimension", "I was in an immense forest full of fluorescent trees."
The living room is still here, but thin, like a slide projected on top of somewhere else. Behind it there is a corridor that goes on further than the house does.
Presences and voices
Contact with beings or entities is a recurring theme, noted in the Johns Hopkins study (Johnson et al., 2011). Barcelona participants felt "the presence of other life forms in that other world" and heard voices that "knew me and called me by my name" (Maqueda et al., 2015). Reports differ in whether these presences feel friendly, busy, indifferent or insistent.
Three of them, or one in three places. They seem busy, like staff before opening time, and mildly surprised that I have come in through this door.
Laughter
Uncontrolled laughter is on the DEA's list of effects, and in a controlled study people laughed, talked and moved more on an active dose than on placebo (Addy, 2012). One Barcelona volunteer "was dying of laughter with the perspective of the existence of other worlds containing life". The laughter in reports tends to come near the end, as the layers slide back.
Back on the sofa and I cannot stop laughing, because a chair is just a chair again and nobody else seems to find that remarkable.
Childhood and familiar places
Revisiting childhood memories was one of the themes that recurred across sessions at Johns Hopkins, along with cartoon-like imagery (Johnson et al., 2011). In Barcelona: "it was very familiar, like the reality of my childhood" (Maqueda et al., 2015). Many reports describe a place that feels known without being a memory.
A playground with flat colours, outlined in black like a picture book. I know which swing is mine, though I have never been here.
Losing the body
The Barcelona study found an inverted U: lower doses increased bodily sensations, while the highest dose led to "a sense of a complete loss of contact with the body" (Maqueda et al., 2015). Participants said "I have forgotten my body completely" and "I was an energetic being". The DEA also lists a sense of loss of body.
There is no inside or outside. There is a point of view, and it is not sure whose.
Gaps in memory
Recall and recognition of what happened during the effect were weaker in a controlled study (MacLean et al., 2013). Sitters often hear a much shorter story than the one the person felt they lived, and sometimes see behaviour (talking, getting up, laughing) that the person does not remember.
According to the sitter I asked twice what day it was. According to me I was a staircase.
Why the same themes return
Salvinorin A acts on the kappa opioid receptor, which sets it apart from psilocybin or LSD; a study in Barcelona showed that blocking that receptor blocked the effects (Maqueda et al., 2016). In an earlier study the same team concluded that this receptor plays a prominent role in sensory perception, body awareness and the sense of body ownership (Maqueda et al., 2015), which matches the themes above: pressure, pulling, splitting and leaving the body.
How far a trip goes into these themes depends mostly on the amount and the strength. Read the composite reports by strength or the stories by theme, and see minute by minute for when each theme usually appears.
